Game Day Essentials [For Every Football Coach’s Wife]

Going to a football game as a coach's wife is a lot like going as a spectator—except you're there longer, have a bit more responsibility, and need to be prepared not just for yourself, but for your husband as well. For me, getting to the games 30 minutes early so that coach and I can do our pre-game tradition and leaving 30-60 minutes after so that we can debrief means I'm on the football field for a total of 4-5 hours. And let me tell you, being a coach's wife means there are always school administrators, alumni, staff, and parents to meaningfully interact with, so I have to be ready at all times.

Then, there's always a chance your coach has forgotten his lucky sunglasses, branded hat, or favorite slacks... or is that just my coach?! 😂 With it being my third season as a coach's WAG, and my second as the wife of a head coach, I've learned my game day essentials through trial and error. Add to that the fact that my ten-year-old daughter often comes with me to games when she's not with her dad, and you can bet I've had to figure out what to bring to keep her comfortable and entertained too. So in this post, we'll cover all the bases. Let’s dive in!

My Game Day Essentials

1. Sunglasses

Football season spans the summer and fall, which means bright, sunny days for the first half of the season. I always bring a pair of dark-lensed sunglasses with plastic frames. Why plastic frames? Because when you're running around on the sidelines, the last thing you want is to worry about treating your sunglasses delicately. Plus, dark lenses keep out all that harsh sunlight, making it easier to keep an eye on the game and those sideline interactions.

2. Tinted Chapstick

Between cheering, chatting, and posing for photos, your lips can take a beating. I’m not one to constantly reapply lip liner and lipstick throughout the game. Instead, I apply my lip color when I arrive and carry a tinted chapstick that matches in my pocket or purse. My go-to? Ruby Kisses RoseHip Chapstick. It keeps my lips moisturized and adds just the right amount of color without needing constant touch-ups.

3. Gum/Candy

This might seem like a small thing, but trust me, it’s essential. I don’t chew gum during the game, but I keep it on hand just in case coach needs it. Something about coaches needing something to chew on during those intense moments... or maybe that’s just my coach! Either way, it’s a small item that can make a big difference.

4. Powder/Blotting Sheets

Football games can get hot, and the last thing I want is to look shiny in photos. I keep a compact of Covergirl translucent powder in my car and touch up my face during halftime if needed. It’s a quick and easy way to stay camera-ready, no matter how intense the game gets.

5. AirPods

Games are noisy, and if a family member, friend, or school staff needs to call me, I need to be able to hear them. That’s where my AirPods come in handy. They’re small, easy to carry in my purse and make it so much easier to hear during all the excitement.

6. Neck Fan

The first third of the season can be brutally hot, so I always bring my neck fan. It’s a lifesaver during those roasting games, keeping me cool and comfortable. And sometimes, I let coach use it during halftime! If you don’t have one yet, you can find great options on Amazon.

7. Coat

As the season progresses, the weather can change drastically from the first to the second half of the game. I always keep a coat in the car and grab it during halftime when the temperature drops. My current favorite is an H&M shacket (similar linked here)—stylish yet functional for those cooler nights.

8. Crossbody Purse

I’ve learned that a small crossbody purse is my best friend on game days. It’s just the right size to hold my essentials without being bulky, and it allows me to move freely on the sidelines. Plus, as I get older, I find that my shoulders and back appreciate the lighter load. The key here is to go small and functional!

9. Sneakers

When you’re on your feet for 4-5 hours, comfort is key. That’s why I mostly wear sneakers to games. Coach likes for me to stand on the sideline, which means I’m on grass or turf for hours. My sneaker of choice is the Nike Air Max—they’re comfy, and supportive, and come in a variety of cool color combos. And when the weather turns misty or rainy, I swap them out for my Dr. Marten boots.

10. Cash

Concessions are a must! Whether it’s street tacos at home games or chili cheese nachos at away games, I always bring cash. It’s just easier than hoping the stand takes cards, especially at away games. And trust me, there’s nothing like a halftime snack to keep you going.

11. Child’s Tablet/Book

When my daughter comes to the games, I make sure she brings her tablet or a book to keep her entertained. It’s a long day for her too, and this ensures she stays happy and occupied. Plus, it gives me peace of mind knowing she’s entertained and comfortable.

12. Child’s Beanie and Coat

The weather can change quickly, especially during the second half of the season. I always make sure my daughter brings a beanie and coat to keep her warm as the night cools down. It’s all about being prepared for any weather!

13. Child’s Snacks

Just like her mom, my daughter needs snacks for those inevitable hunger pangs. I also make sure she eats a good meal and uses the restroom right before the game starts—no one wants to be searching for a bathroom during the middle of a game!

Tips for Gameday Success

To make the most of your gameday experience, here are a few tips:

  • Plan Ahead: Map out the location and check traffic ahead of time, especially for away games.

  • Arrive Early: Get there early to avoid the rush and ensure you’re settled before the game starts. It also gives you time to greet everyone and check in with coach before the game begins.

  • Stay Focused: I prefer not to sit or stand with others for long because I’m focused on coach and the game. It’s our time to connect, even if we’re not directly interacting during the game. But that’s just me. If you like the company, seek out your other WAGs or family and friends.

It’s All About Balance

Being a coach’s wife on gameday is all about balance—supporting your husband, staying comfortable, and being prepared for anything that comes your way. With these essentials in your arsenal, you’ll be ready to tackle any game day with confidence and style.
