The Stationary That Made Our Wedding Day Uniquely Us

Nine months into wedded bliss, and I’m still thinking about the little details that made our wedding so special. The big moments—the vows, the first dance, the celebration—were incredible, but what I really feel proud of are the intentional, unexpected touches that made our day feel like us. And a huge part of that was our wedding stationery.

Because our stationery wasn’t just paper—it was storytelling. It was a way to introduce our guests to our love story before they even arrived, to make them feel included, and to add thoughtful details that made our wedding uniquely ours. From custom watercolor invitations to personalized wedding bingo, every detail had meaning. And if you're in the thick of wedding planning, wondering how to make your day feel even more special, I promise—it's the little things that make the biggest impact.

So, let’s talk about the details that made our hearts swell and how you can incorporate meaningful stationery elements into your wedding.

Set the Tone with a Custom Invitation

Your wedding invitation is the very first impression your guests will have of your big day. It’s not just a piece of paper—it’s a preview of what’s to come. For us, we wanted to capture the magic of our unique venue, the place where all the history would be made.

So, instead of a standard invitation, we worked with Saridjo Prints to create a custom watercolor painting of our venue. It was soft, romantic, and personal—a way to let our guests feel the beauty of the place before they even arrived. And honestly? It became more than just an invitation. It was a keepsake. Something we now have framed in our home as a reminder of the day.

How to make it your own:

  • Opt for custom illustrations—whether it’s your venue, your pet, or even a special landmark in your love story.

  • Consider vellum overlays, wax seals, or pressed flowers for a unique touch.

  • Play with fonts and colors that reflect the vibe of your wedding—formal and elegant, modern and minimal, or warm and whimsical.

Make It Fun (Especially for the Kids!)

For my first wedding, I made a firm decision—no kids. But, inevitably, children still showed up. And let me tell you, when there’s only one or two kids at a wedding, they will find a way to entertain themselves. Having something small to keep them occupied can make a world of difference.

This time around, I didn’t have a big kid-friendly wedding either. In fact, we only had two kids in attendance—our daughter, Ava, and her best friend. But that made us even more intentional about making them feel included.

Instead of a traditional “kids’ table,” we gave them something special: a custom puzzle from Shutterfly, made from a portrait of the three of us. The girls immediately turned it into a competition, determined to finish first, and it ended up being such a sweet moment. It kept them engaged without pulling them away from the celebration, gave them something meaningful to do while the adults socialized, and became a keepsake they could take home. Weddings can feel long for little ones, but giving them a small, interactive detail like this made them feel like part of the day rather than just along for the ride.

Other ways to make kids feel included:

  • Activity books customized with your wedding details (mazes, word searches, coloring pages!).

  • Personalized gift bags with small toys, snacks, and a disposable camera.

  • A dedicated “kids’ toast” with sparkling cider.

If you’re having children at your wedding, even just a small personal touch can make them feel like an important part of your day.

Get Your Guests Involved with Custom Wedding Bingo

But my absolute favorite detail was our custom wedding bingo.

Designed by Willow Lane Paperie, our wedding bingo wasn’t just a fun icebreaker—it was a way to celebrate our connections with each and every guest. Instead of random facts about us as a couple, each bingo square included a detail about our relationship with the guests in attendance. Whether it was how we met, a special memory, or a fun inside joke, our guests weren’t just learning about us—they were seeing how they were woven into our story.

It was such a hit. People were mingling, reminiscing, and laughing over their shared squares, and it made our reception feel even more intimate. And to keep things exciting, we added a little incentive: a prize for the first bingo winner—a gift card to one of our wedding vendors, who also happens to be a dear friend. It was a fun way to support a small business while also giving our guests something meaningful to take home.

Want to do the same?

  • Create a bingo card featuring personalized details about your connections with guests.

  • Use fun facts, special memories, or wedding-day moments (like “The bride cries during vows” or “Groomsman delivers a toast that makes everyone tear up”).

  • Offer a prize—anything from a bottle of champagne to a gift card to one of your favorite local businesses.

  • If bingo isn’t your thing, consider a wedding trivia game or a fun “Who’s Most Likely To?” list about you and your spouse.

It’s these small, thoughtful details that transform a wedding from just an event into a true celebration of love, connection, and community.

Why Thoughtful Details Matter

Looking back, these might seem like small things—an illustrated invitation, a puzzle, a bingo card. But to us they were everything.

Because the truth is, weddings aren’t just about the big moments. They’re about the in-between ones. The tiny, thoughtful, unexpected touches that make your day yours.

When guests left our wedding, they didn’t just remember the food or the music. They remembered the stationery details that made them feel included, the games that made them laugh, and the love woven into every aspect of the day.

So if you’re in the middle of planning your wedding, I encourage you—don’t overlook the little things. They might just end up being the details that mean the most.

Your Wedding, Your Story

If there’s one thing I learned from planning my second wedding, it’s this: make it feel like YOU.

Whether it’s custom invitations, playful reception games, or handwritten notes for each guest—whatever speaks to your love story is exactly what belongs in your wedding.

Brides-to-be: What’s one small detail you’re planning that feels uniquely you?
Married friends: What’s one little thing from your wedding that still makes you smile?

Drop it in the comments—I’d love to hear!
